

2022 was a transformative year for Southern, one which saw the opening of our Health and Human Services building, the arrival of Officer K9 Jules, and exciting new programs and initiatives implemented.

New Business School Dean Announced – Dr. Jess Boronico came to Southern this summer with an extensive and outstanding record of academic business leadership positions at a variety of schools including NYIT, the University of New Haven, William Paterson University, and Monmouth University.

Retired Police Chief Takes On New Role – Retired Southern Police Chief Joseph Dooley, MBA ’10, joined Wallingford-based public safety company Mutualink as its newest Director of Public Safety and Security Solutions in August after a 16-year career serving and protecting the campus community.

A Rare Exhibit Opens On Campus – A complete set of illustrations by famed surrealist artist Salvador Dalí (1904 – 1989), part of the university’s art collection, was on view this spring in a Buley Art Gallery exhibition, “Salvador Dali Illustrates The Divine Comedy.”

A Southern Legend Retires – James Barber, ’64, MS ’79, who gave 58 years of dedicated service to the university, crafted a legacy of change at Southern, and used his career to advance inclusivity and access at the institution.

Food Delivery Robots Arrive At Southern – Kiwibot, a robotic sidewalk delivery startup, announces its arrival at Southern in October, ensuring an affordable on-campus food delivery service for students.

Barnard Scholars Demonstrate Leadership, Engagement – April saw four Southern seniors who’ve demonstrated a strong commitment to leadership, academics, and community engagement named this year’s recipients of the Henry Barnard Distinguished Student Award.

New State Program to Address Healthcare Shortages Announced on Campus – Our new College of Health and Human Services building played host to Governor Ned Lamont’s launch of CT Health Horizons, a new initiative in collaboration with Connecticut State Colleges and Universities (CSCU) and multiple state agencies to address shortages in nursing and behavioral health providers on the heels of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Celebrating Southern’s Retirees – Over 90 members of Southern’s faculty and staff retired over the past year, and to recognize these individuals and their many contributions to the university, a celebration of Southern retirees was held in May the Alumni House front lawn.

Major Grant Provides Expansive Career Opportunities for Nurses – Announced in April, an expansive four-year partnership between the Yale New Haven Health System and Southern will double the number of B.S. nurses graduating from the university within the next four years, helping to address a critical nursing shortage in Connecticut heightened by the COVID-19 pandemic.
